Code of Conduct

The primary goal of HANAMI is to enhance collaboration in High-Performance Computing between Europe and Japan. HANAMI is committed to promoting transparency, honesty, and responsibility. Members and partners of HANAMI should have confidence that the organization will fulfill its commitments in an ethically sustainable manner.

HANAMI's values serve as the cornerstone of our actions. This Code of Conduct translates these values into practical guidelines, outlining our definition of good scientific practices and fostering healthy interactions with interest groups, the environment, and society at large. HANAMI is dedicated to advancing science and international collaboration with the highest ethical standards.

We expect all members of HANAMI to adhere to this vision, and we strongly encourage our partners and suppliers to embrace the values outlined in this Code of Conduct endorsed by HANAMI.

Operating principles

HANAMI values

Values serve as the moral compass for HANAMI, guiding all our decisions. We consistently uphold our core values in every situation, acting responsibly, with care, together, and with expertise.

Respecting basic rights and the law.

We adhere to internationally recognized human rights, as outlined in the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights¹ and the international labor standards established by the International Labour Organization (ILO)². We also uphold the ten principles of the UN Global Compact.
Mutual trust and appreciation are essential for HANAMI's success. We champion equality and will not tolerate discrimination, harassment, inappropriate behavior, or intimidation for any reason.

Preserving the Common Good

The goal of preserving the common good is reinforced by implementing a whistle-blower mechanism. This mechanism allows anyone to report situations that may pose a serious threat to the public interest.

Ethics

Relationships among HANAMI members must be guided by respect and trust. Everyone has the responsibility never to engage in actions that could cast the slightest doubt on HANAMI's ethics.

HANAMI encourages the reporting of ethical incidents, and no member may face sanctions for using reporting measures for such incidents, selflessly and in good faith, or for refusing to carry out an act believed to go against HANAMI's ethical principles.

Scientific integrity

Scientific integrity is considered a professional code of conduct specific to knowledge generation, extending beyond HANAMI's Code of Conduct. Similar to ethics, it involves due consideration of values, ultimate aims, and consequences of actions.

Scientific integrity encompasses rules and values governing research activities to ensure their genuineness and scientific rigor. It is grounded in principles like honesty, reliability, rigor, and transparency, fulfilling our responsibility to future generations of scientists and fellow citizens.
