HANAMI at SC24: Bridging Continents in High-Performance Computing

At SC24, the world’s premier conference on high-performance computing (HPC), the HANAMI project was the centerpiece of a Birds of a Feather (BoF) session titled “Building International HPC Collaborations Across Continents to Tackle Grand Challenges: The HANAMI Project.” The session highlighted the project’s ambitious goal of uniting Europe and Japan to address pressing issues in HPC, showcasing the potential of global partnerships in driving innovation and tackling complex scientific problems.

The session was led by Sophia Honisch from the High-Performance Computing Center Stuttgart (HLRS) and featured an esteemed panel of international experts. These included Erik Lindahl from KTH Royal Institute of Technology and Stockholm University in Sweden; Edouard Audit and France Boillod-Cerneux from the Atomic Energy and Alternative Energies Commission (CEA) in France; Fabrizio Gagliardi of the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) in Spain; Per Öster from CSC – IT Center for Science in Finland; Taisuke Boku from the University of Tsukuba in Japan; and Kengo Nakajima from the University of Tokyo.

    Addressing Global Challenges Through Collaboration

The session delved into how HANAMI is tackling critical issues in high-performance computing, particularly in rapidly evolving fields such as artificial intelligence and climate modeling. These domains demand not only unprecedented computational power but also interdisciplinary and intercontinental cooperation. Historically, HPC ecosystems have been fragmented by regional divides, leading to duplicated efforts and missed opportunities for global synergy.

Panelists explained how HANAMI represents a transformative shift in addressing these challenges. By fostering international collaboration, the project consolidates resources, streamlines research efforts, and catalyzes innovation at an unprecedented scale.

“The SC24 session underscored the transformative power of international collaboration in high-performance computing.”, said Sophia Honisch, session chair. “By engaging with experts from beyond Europe and Japan, we gained invaluable insights into shared challenges and innovative approaches that enrich HANAMI’s sustainability roadmap. This global exchange reaffirms that tackling the grand challenges of our time demands collective ingenuity and commitment across continents.”

The panel also emphasized HANAMI’s role in helping research teams adapt to the rapid pace of technological advancement in HPC. By establishing a robust network for knowledge exchange and platform development, the project equips researchers to navigate next-generation architectures and methodologies effectively.

A Vision for Global Scientific Cooperation

The session concluded with a compelling call to expand the collaborative model established by HANAMI. The speakers underscored the necessity of transcending geographical boundaries to tackle the grand challenges of computational science. They highlighted how coordinated global efforts can advance research, accelerate innovation, and address the complex problems that define the modern era.
