HANAMI strengthens EU-Japan HPC collaboration with two events in Chamonix

HANAMI organised two high-level events in Chamonix, France, to develop and reinforce international scientific collaboration between Europe and Japan. Bringing together researchers, policymakers and experts from both regions, the initiative combined scientific exchange with strategic discussion on the future of EU–Japan cooperation in high-performance computing (HPC).

Over three days, more than 80 participants from Europe and Japan took part in over 50 talks during the second edition of the HANAMI High-Level Symposium, hosted by the CEA. The programme included keynote lectures, thematic panels and networking sessions focused on strategic scientific domains such as climate and weather modelling, biomedical science and materials science. Participants had the opportunity to discuss recent scientific breakthroughs and share insights from ongoing joint initiatives.

Building on the scientific momentum of the symposium, the HANAMI Europe-Japan HPC Strategic Dialogue focused on future priorities and long-term cooperation mechanisms. Under the theme “What’s next for strategic scientific areas?”, high-level speakers from Europe and Japan discussed key scientific challenges and how collaboration frameworks could evolve in the upcoming years.

Together, these events firmly position the HANAMI project as a catalyst for long-term collaboration between Europe and Japan in HPC, supporting a shared ambition to advance scientific excellence through next-generation computing infrastructures and high-impact research.
